Department of Health and Social Care Response

Firstly, we have received a response from the Department of Health and Social Care following the meeting we had with them back in March. That meeting should have been with Wes Streeting , but he was unavailable at the last minute and it was with a Junior Health Minister, Zubair Ahmed. Both Ministers have since resigned from the Cabinet, so there has been a delay in the departments response.

You can read the letter here. We are pleased with the general tone, however we feel there is a lack of focus on accountability and scrutiny, particularly of the MHRA, and we shall be making those points. There are positive take aways, however, and they are highlighted below:

  • Department and NHS England establish a group dedicated to DES that comprised of senior clinical leads from NHSE England and includes the Patient Safety Commissioner.
  • Formally commissioned the University of Exeter, via the NIHR, to undertake a systematic evidence review concerning the impacts of DES.
  • DHSC has discussed with the University how it would be beneficial for the evidence review to engage with members of the campaign group DES Justice UK to learn from people with lived experience of the effects of DES.
  • The University researchers will shortly be contacting DES Justice UK to discuss how best this might work.
  • DHSC written to the MHRA to ask it to outline what steps it has taken to determine whether it is possible to retrieve any records containing information on individuals who were prescribed DES.
  • DHSC officials have begun the work to explore what can be done on the recovery of missing or destroyed medical records through NHS Digital processes

Debate in the Parliament

We also bring exciting news that there will be a debate in the Parliament on Monday 29th June. It is titled:

Intergenerational impacts of diethylstilbestrol on mothers and children.

This is excellent news and something we have been working hard towards. You can attend the debate if you wish, unfortunately, it is after the main business of the day and is likely to be 7/8pm ish.

The most important thing however – is that your MP attends on your behalf! Please write or email to them , stating that you expect them to attend the debate on your behalf. You can also send them a copy of the recent letter from the Minister. You can download a template letter to send to your MP here.

We are possibly going to try and have some engagement or a meet up in Westminster that day for the campaign. Do keep the date free if you are able. More details to follow and information about how you can attend Parliament if you wish to watch the debate.

Fundraising

We are pleased to tell you that the group, DES Justice UK is in the process of being formalised. It will have Directors and a Committee, all of whom are Members of the Campaign and have been involved from the beginning.

This means that the Group will eventually be run by you, for you. This is an incredible step forward, and there has been some amazing work behind the scenes to make this happen. We will do an introduction to the Committee very soon!

Formalising a campaign group does require funds. I have put a list below simply of the start up costs. To raise these initial costs, the campaign now has a Go Fund Me page. The link is here. Please share with family and friends. If you can contribute , please do, every penny will go to supporting this campaign, helping it to grow and work hard for truth, accountability, awareness and screening.

  • Website costs - £120 p/a
  • Bank account minimum deposit - £50
  • Liability insurance - £400
  • Companies House registration - £100
  • PO Box registration £260
  • Printing promotional materials - varies
  • Venue hire – varies

The list goes on as you can imagine! Nobody is obliged to contribute and if you do wish to do so, you can do it anonymously.

As the Group is being finalised, and the Committee are choosing their roles. It has become apparent very quickly that there will be a large number of sub committees that will need members to support. We would love you to get involved. We want this to be a thriving, engaging and inclusive campaign and we are so excited to hear how you can help. If you would like to get involved, please fill out this form.

DES Justice UK Embroidery Campaign

I am also delighted to bring news of a new project to you all! Charlotte – a DES Granddaughter and campaign member, is a wonderful hand embroidery graduate of the Royal School of Needlework and she would love to create a community project to help preserve the names of people affected by DES in a lasting legacy piece.

Charlotte’s final dissertation was focused on embroidery in women’s protest throughout history so it certainly seems fitting that she should spearhead this project!

Charlotte’s concept for this artwork would be a large patchwork made up of embroidered patches. Each patch would represent a persons name written in code. The names would be represented by different stitches, however the overall patchwork would create an image created in the iconic colouring of the DES justice badges.

You can do a patch for yourself, as well as those loved ones that you would like to remember. I absolutely LOVE this idea and I think it would be such an amazing visual and creative part of our campaign. You will read that if you would prefer your patch to be embroidered for you, we are delighted to say that the Royal School of Needlework have agreed to help us with this as a student project.

Click to learn more about how you can create a DES embroidered patch.

I do hope you are all doing well. Even if you do not follow politics, you cannot fail to have become aware that there is political division at present following the local elections. We will continue to apply pressure and hold those in power to account for DES and are monitoring the situation closely.

Staying Connected

The Facebook group DES Daughters and Sons Support Group UK is live and active. You can join here or via the button below.

The group has been created by the incredibly brave Suzanne, who talked about her lifetime of destructive health problems as a result of her mother being prescribed DES for an ITV News documentary.

You can watch this video message from Suzanne, who shares her hopes for the Facebook group and why she encourages you to join. This is a safe, private space for those affected by DES to chat privately and share experiences. To be clear, the group is not run by Broudie Jackson Canter. This is a separate safe space ran by Suzanne to help connect DES Daughters and Sons.

You can get in touch with us at DESJustice@broudiejacksoncanter.co.uk.

Do take care and, as always, drop me a line if you want to chat, I do this work alongside my regular case load, so it may not always be immediate – but I will get back to you.

I am helped on the DES inbox by Gabriel, Sorcha, and Laura. They all are passionate about this campaign and your information is dealt with in the strictest of confidence. Information can be overwhelming, so please take care of yourself and step away if you need to do so.

In solidarity,

Clare (Partner)
